Quote from the school magazine July 1942,'Our activities have taken many forms, from collecting paper salvage, to raising money for Warships Week, to marching in threes on the flat roof as a member of the newly formed G.T.C. to asking Mr Donald Grant searching questions about the world situation.'(I don't know who Mr Grant was)</p>

<p>An annual swimming gala in which the four school houses, all named after local lakes, competed for a cup. I don't think we did compete as Houses very often - just sporting occasions.
</p>
<p>The editor recalls doing a back dive off the top board for her House one year. As she had never done this dive before, at any height, this did not turn out to be a good move.....

<p>Lots of swimmers are watched by the rest of the school. What they are doing exactly is a mystery! Meanwhile, the audience relaxes on the bank, all in their candy striped summer dresses. A blackboard, desk and chair, on the far side of the pool, suggest that this is the annual House Swimming Gala. It looks like it was the perfect day, as far as the weather was concerned. In the background can be seen Tremhyfryd and the school playing field. The field was the scene of many a cricket practice in summer under the watchful and sometimes exasperated eye of DBL, a keen cricketer herself in her time.

<p>The school opened on 8th February 1878 with Miss Emily Armstrong as the first headmistress. There were 19 boarders in the first term. Eluned Morgan (writer) and Margaret Owen (later to become Margaret LLoyd George) were pupils while Miss Armstrong was in charge.

<p>The centrefold of the 1903 prospectus shows 15 girls dotted around a field playing hockey. The girls are all wearing hats,long sleeved blouses and long skirts.
Cattle can be seen in the picture too. Presumably the livestock were separated by a fence from the players.

<p>This room was later to become the Geography room. In 1903 it seems to have been multipurpose. Perhaps it was used for performances as well as for instruction. There is an upright piano and two sets of curtains could have been used to divide the space. The double desks are worn and scratched. Ink wells are visible on the desks in the foreground. The room is lined with pictures and busts. A satchel hangs over a seat.

<p>The curriculum had included butter making and cookery since Miss Fewings' time (headmistress 1886-1896). This image shows a wooden churn,and what perhaps is a gaslit stove to the right of the table. A set of scales can be seen on the left and what looks like an oven is in the foreground, on the right. The room is lined with shelves for pans, jugs,jelly moulds, colanders and plates. There is no sink visible in this picture. The kitchen is gaslit.
