<p>The soldiers,wearing camouflaged pyjamas and frills of DWS colours, gave a concert too. 'Burglar Jim' was deemed 'the most thrilling item. The song 'When you're a long long way from home' brought tears to many eyes, 'the loneliness of the boys in France seemed so real'. (This song, written in 1914 and recorded by Henry Burr, was popular during the War years)

<p>Everyone joined in the chorus of 'Goodbye-ee'. 'The soldiers had a version of their own' (It would be interesting to know what that was!) They wanted to dance as a 'grand finale; but time did not permit'. In short, everyone had a great time. The following week DWS girls went to a special matinee of the Men's Pierrot concert given especially for their benefit.

<p>This item, from the July 1919 'School Notes', records how the news came at 11.30 a.m. It was a 'great surprise'. Lessons stopped, flags were found from nowhere, church bells pealed again after a long silence, everyone cheered, the girls marched. A huge bonfire was lit and mistresses and girls encircled it, singing patriotic songs until they had no voices left. Then they all went in and danced.

<p>We are not sure who the girls are in this picture but we think the walk could have been one we knew as 'Plantation'.
</p>
<p>'Plantation' was at the top of the hill, way above Penycoed, the biggest of the DWS boarding houses. There is housing at the photograph's location today.'Plantation' is no more.
</p>

<p>Four girls on a compulsory walk. We do not know where this photo was taken or the identity of the fourth girl. They are probably all in the Upper Fourth . Iona wears her gym slip four inches above the knee when kneeling (a school rule))and her long hair is tied in bunches, another school rule.

<p>Compulsory weekend walks in 'crocodiles' were the order of the day. Walking routes took us to Llanfacreth, Torrent Walk, Llanelltyd, Traction Engine, Plantation, and somewhere called Paradise, which I think was up Cader Road.
</p>

<p>Susan and Jane grin at the photographer. They are both wearing their school uniform issue dungarees. Dungarees were only worn by the junior school pupils (based at Glyn). For most lessons Susan and Jane would have worn gym slips, just like their counterparts in the first three years at the Senior school.

<p>Front page of the school magazine in 1905, an article about the progress of the new South Wing. There are two sick rooms,a convalescent room and a nurse's room. Then there are servants' quarters, larders, a box room and hot air stands for drying boots in a large boot room.
</p>
<p>'No wonder people hold up their hands in astonishment when they see Dr Williams' School, and compare the fees charged with the accommodation received in return!'
</p>
<p>The school had to limit the number of boarders while this, and other work took place, so that maids could be accommodated in one of the dormitories.
</p>

<p>The cover of the programme is printed with a blue 'willow pattern' background. The prizes in 1902 were distributed by Mrs Steel. The page shows some of those who were awarded prizes from the Royal Drawing Society of Great Britain. Miss Diana Thomas was the headmistress at the time.
