<p>The first school magazine was published in 1897 as a link between the pupils and the old girls. It was edited by Miss Anstey, (Senior Mistress) with an introduction by Miss Fewings from Australia. This first edition included an article by ex pupil Eluned Morgan Jones, written from Patagonia.
</p>
<p>The cover used the school clours of green and white and was designed by Miss Louie Rigotti, an old girl studying art in Manchester. The original school motto, 'Honour Before Honours' can be seen in the scroll at the top.

<p>Margaret Griffiths, Jeanette James, Gwyneth Powell, Pamela Thom, Anne Lloyd Davies and Mary Hewitt from Forms V1A and V1B debated at a Mock Election during the Easter Term 1949.
</p>
<p> Margaret holds the 'VOTE LIBERAL' poster - she was related to Clement Davies (former Liberal MP for Montgomeryshire).Pam Thom and Shirley Rushton were candidates too. The Communist party is also represented by Anne and Mary who hold a poster depicting the Hammer and Sickle,with the slogan 'THE DEMOCRACY'. The other two parties appear to represent girls at the school, as opposed to other political parties current at the time.
</p>
<p>The girls are wearing their Sunday Best school uniform for the photograph. The dress wasn't the favourite item of uniform and was generally called a sack!
</p>

<p>The 1911 Census records that Florence Anstey was born in Bath, Somerset and was 44 at the time the Census was taken and that she was not a Welsh speaker. There were seven Assistant Mistresses, aged between 27 and 33, resident at the school at the time. Five spoke only English the other two spoke English and Welsh.
</p>
<p>79 pupils are recorded; most were born in Wales or England. Three pupils were born in Bombay, Madras and Shanghai respectively.
</p>
<p>One of the pupils (Dorothy May Davies) aged 16 and from Liverpool, was to go on to become something of a legend at DWS. She retired in 1961 after 42 years teaching.
</p>
<p>The DWS Homefront 1914 gallery pages on this site reveal how the school 'did its bit', affording glimpses of the impact of the war in rural Wales and on one school community. Miss Anstey must have been a source of inspiration for all their efforts.
</p>
