<p>This sampler is being donated by the granddaughter of Emily Williams to Dolgellau Record Office. Emily was born on 19th January 1875. She was a day pupil at DWS. Her name and 'Dr Wms' school' are embroidered in this detail, along with the initials of her sisters and brothers, Mary Ann,Nellie, Richard Parry and Albert Wilson Williams. The sampler must have been done after 1887 when Albert was born.
Emily lived at Gwernan Villa, near Gwernan Lake at the foot of Cader Idris. Her father was a Traveller at the time of the 1891 Census.

Sadly I only found this scrapbook after her death - so never got the chance to talk about it.

This image shows students then who were daughters of Old Girls.
I am pictured at the back,right hand side. Two others in the picture were the Hunter sisters from Tal y Llyn. I cannot remember who the others were.Perhaps someone else recognises who was who !
I know this was a long time ago, but I have kept the whole page cutting all about DWS- it has been to South America and back !A bit faded now though.

Frontispiece of her school exercise book, Easter Term 1912, This exercise book, now held in Dolgellau Record Office, is full of recipes and household hints. The 1911 Census tells us Enid Mary Evans was a DWS boarder from Abergele born about 1896

Continues from 'Rules for Cleaning knives'(see Related Items) Enid goes though how to clean the range and set the fire step by step.'Remove the ashes and keep the cinders.'Sweep around the top of the oven and in by the hot water flue'.'Polish with a blacklead brush'-not required every day, just when necessary. 'Rub the steel with emery papers'.To set the fire, pull out all the 'dampers',roll up paper and'lay in the bottom',lay the sticks,put on coal,close grate and light.Sweep and dust the kitchen.

Two new pupils describe the train journey to 'Dolgelley'.The language they use sounds like Angela Brazil's fictional accounts of jolly boarding school life.Margaret and Hilary feel their spirits lift. Other girls travelling are in the 'highest spirits'.Friendly girls, very generous with 'tuck'who raised many a 'hearty laugh'.More 'jolly and noisy girls'were introduced.They 'seemed to become one of them all at once'.The girls unpack,eat a'hearty meal' are 'ordered to bed'a member of DWS at last.
