<p>The writer Eluned Morgan Jones was born in 1870 on board The Myfanwy en route to the Welsh settlement in Patagonia.The daughter of one of the first settlers,she was sent to Dr Williams' School in 1885 speaking Spanish and Welsh. This letter appears in the first edition of the School Magazine in 1897 on her return to Patagonia.
She writes in particular to the Welsh girls on this occasion. Eluned's letter is about a love of the language, speaking and reading Welsh.
She asks would they like to travel the length and breadth of Wales without hearing one word of the old Welsh tongue being spoken?

<p>Writing to the Welsh girls in particular, Eluned notes that according to their own admission, they do not read Welsh almost at all and if they did they would not be well versed in the language to follow the thoughts of the writer.
Such a thing would be unheard of by the English, she says - to hear Welsh children admit that they are not able to read their own language! ....Very little labour would be needed to be able to read and speak Welsh as well as they do English.

<p>This school magazine page concludes Eluned's letter. The 1897 editor (in English) responds to Eluned's criticism concerning the availability of books written in Welsh in the School Library . Eluned doubts whether it contains one Welsh book. Eluned exhorts pupils to remember they are Welsh and to use and read their own language. Welsh was a subject taught at the school the editor says.

<p>A page from the first ever school magazine. Eluned Morgan has been living in Patagonia, her 'adopted home'since leaving school. She visited DWS in November and spoke about 'many interesting things about the Welsh colony in that distant land'.
Her letter to the Welsh girls is also published on this website.
Interestingly, another item mentions former pupil Mattie Roberts. Mattie had qualified to teach cookery, laundry work, dressmaking,millinery, art and needlework. She had sailed to Australia with Miss Rutter (another DWS teacher) to teach at the Girls' Grammar school in Brisbane. The Headmistress there was Miss Fewings. Miss Fewings had been the Headmistress at DWS from 1886 to 1896.

<p>Jane and her family are on the left of the picture, her brother is in the grey coat at the front.I'm with my mum and younger brother. Jane was one of my 'best friends'. Like me, she arrived late at DWS so we were natural allies. Jane had some 'street cred'. We all thought her cousin was Tony Hicks from The Hollies (a top 1960s pop group). Surprisingly, I also had some 'street cred' having Mary Whitehouse as an aunt ...well, maybe not exactly 'street cred' in my case! This slide transparency shows us all having a walk around the lake, probably after a sunday lunch at the Tynycornel hotel This was a real treat and a respite from 'Rhino'(roast beef) and the thick apricot tart, smothered with condensed milk, which was our regular Sunday fare at school.

<p>We are not sure who the girls are in this picture but we think the walk could have been one we knew as 'Plantation'.
</p>
<p>'Plantation' was at the top of the hill, way above Penycoed, the biggest of the DWS boarding houses. There is housing at the photograph's location today.'Plantation' is no more.

<p>Four girls on a compulsory walk. We do not know where this photo was taken or the identity of the fourth girl. They are probably all in the Upper Fourth . Iona wears her gym slip four inches above the knee when kneeling (a school rule))and her long hair is tied in bunches, another school rule.

<p>Compulsory weekend walks in 'crocodiles' were the order of the day. Walking routes took us to Llanfacreth, Torrent Walk, Llanelltyd, Traction Engine, Plantation, and somewhere called Paradise, which I think was up Cader Road.
</p>

<p>A letter I received from Miss Lickes when a I was a student and working at the Welsh Joint Education Committee in the holidays. It mentions the exams taking place at school and a school sale of work. The new language laboratory is referred to as well as 2 new classrooms.

<p>A Walk to Lake Cynnwch with 'Do' Davies after finishing exams. The girls are holding sphagnum moss which was used during the war. Pupils collected the moss and delivered it to Miss Nightingale's house in Cader Road (headmistress 1924-1940). The Red Cross used the moss to treat soldiers' wounds.
</p>
