<p>By 1887 there was a new headmistress, Eliza Anne Fewings. There were 11 boarders and 30 daygirls when she started in 1886. This programme seems to be mostly a musical entertainment, although it also celebrates pupils' Public Examination success.

<p>Prizes for Needlework (a racquet), Music, a Boarders prize,and a Cooking class prize ('Mrs Beeton's Household Management' for the second year running), a prize for the 'Best Garden'and the 'Champion's Racquet' to be decided by a tennis match.

<p>Ten racquets were awarded as prizes in total at this year's prize giving!
</p>
<p>There are prizes too for Science subjects and Drawing.
</p>
<p>Two songs and a round and a pianoforte solo are included on this page of the programme.

<p>At this time Miss Emily Armstrong (Headmistress 1877-1886) was about to leave to take up a post as Head at Dame Alice Owen's School in London. The certificates on this page reflect a school curriculum which was unusually strong in the sciences for a girls' school at this time. Miss Armstrong taught Biology and Physiology.
</p>
<p>A surprising number of 'racquets' were awarded as prizes, eight on this page alone. Girls were sometimes awarded books and racquets for the same prize.
</p>

<p>Miss Pritchard, Miss Tritton and Mr Griffiths performed the Overture to Don Juan by Mozart. This was followed by choral pieces and 'pianoforte solos'. Prizes were then distributed by the Chair of Governors, Samuel Holland. This was followed by more musical entertainment from Miss Pritchard, Mr Griffiths, Miss Lawford and Miss Madge Roberts. Everyone sang 'God Save the Queen'.
</p>
<p>After the concert a 'Champions Tennis Racquet' was played for. This was given by the poet Lewis Morris.
</p>
<p>Form prizes and 'Good Conduct'prizes for the year 1884 included 'The Boys Mabinogian', 'Green's Short History of the English People', 'Waverley', 'Ivanhoe','Lorna Doone'and 'The Universe'or 'The Infinitely Great and the Infinitely Small, Illustrated'.

<p>The earliest prize day programme shows a record of 'Special Prizes' awarded in 1884. There are Cambridge University Certificates (senior and junior), certificates for physiology, botany, model drawing and geometry. There are music prizes and the winner of the 'Cooking Class' was awarded a copy of 'Mrs Beeton's Household Management'. Other prizes were awarded for the 'Best Garden' and 'Needlework'.
</p>
<p>A 'Boarders Prize' was also awarded. There is no indication as to what a boarder did to merit the prize. I can imagine how thrilled she must have been to read 'Scenes from Clerical Life' as her reward.
</p>
<p>The school's headmistress at this time was Miss Emily Armstrong.
</p>
