Distribution of Prizes by Samuel Holland 1885-1886
At this time Miss Emily Armstrong (Headmistress 1877-1886) was about to leave to take up a post as Head at Dame Alice Owen's School in London. The certificates on this page reflect a school curriculum which was unusually strong in the sciences for a girls' school at this time. Miss Armstrong taught Biology and Physiology.
A surprising number of 'racquets' were awarded as prizes, eight on this page alone. Girls were sometimes awarded books and racquets for the same prize.
