<p>This is an extract of my autograph book which I was given in Upper Thirds, when I was 11 years old. Most of the entries are too embarrassing to publish today, with the exception of this “Wall of Friendship.” I particularly like the two reserved spots for Elizabeth Chapman and Lynne Moorhouse. We remain friends to this day.

<p>In the front row (L-R) are myself (Sue Crowther), Elizabeth Evans and Jane Kelly. In the row behind (L-R) are Jane Kelly’s mother, my mother (Jean Petty), my grandmother and Mr and Mrs Robinson (family friends). We are sitting by one of the WW2 anti-tank cubes on the beach at Fairbourne, after a swim, on a going out weekend.

<p>I was 8 years old when I started at Glyn and this was my first dormitory. It was known as the “Baby dormitory.” I recall that three of my roommates were only 6 years old. My bed and “top” (chest of drawers) are marked with an “x”. We were allowed to have a pyjama case, teddy or doll on our beds, and photos and a beaker with our toothbrush and toothpaste in it, on our tops. This photograph also shows the counterpanes with perfect hospital corners, which we learnt from Day 1.

<p>Sue Crowther, aged 10, at the end of her 2nd year at Glyn Malden, Summer Term 1961. The photograph is taken in the field by the playroom (the old stables and tack room), close to a derelict building that we called "the ballroom". This was the field where we built dens and traded in mud pies, which were decorated with rhododendron flowers and set out on small slabs of slate. Usually, we wore dungarees over our school uniform to play in the field.

<p>This is a picture of me ( Kay Freeman ) and my best friend at DWS Merilyn Hamish ( Merry)
with my Mum. Parents parked on the tennis courts! This was a rare treat for me as my parents lived in Germany and I usually went home by coach and train.

Note from the editor :It has been suggested that this photograph could have been taken on a sponsored walk. The 1970 school magazine records a 'marathon walk of 24 miles'in the summer of 1969. The 'walk was a great success with more than two-thirds of the girls completing the total distance' ( what happened to those who didn't make it is not recorded!) £1,200 was raised for the School Development Fund.
