<p>This sampler is being donated by the granddaughter of Emily Williams to Dolgellau Record Office. Emily was born on 19th January 1875. She was a day pupil at DWS. Her name and 'Dr Wms' school' are embroidered in this detail, along with the initials of her sisters and brothers, Mary Ann,Nellie, Richard Parry and Albert Wilson Williams. The sampler must have been done after 1887 when Albert was born.
Emily lived at Gwernan Villa, near Gwernan Lake at the foot of Cader Idris. Her father was a Traveller at the time of the 1891 Census.

Continues from 'Rules for Cleaning knives'(see Related Items) Enid goes though how to clean the range and set the fire step by step.'Remove the ashes and keep the cinders.'Sweep around the top of the oven and in by the hot water flue'.'Polish with a blacklead brush'-not required every day, just when necessary. 'Rub the steel with emery papers'.To set the fire, pull out all the 'dampers',roll up paper and'lay in the bottom',lay the sticks,put on coal,close grate and light.Sweep and dust the kitchen.

Enid Evans, a boarder at the school has written washing up instructions including the use of hot water and a little soap. 'Use a little washing soda if the plates are greasy.Steep pudding dishes and milk jugs in cold water'. Washing and drying and putting away instructions follow. The writer shares her results so far.
95% for French is her best and all subjects mentioned are in honours, except maths 66%. She explains that 75% and over is 'honours' and she hopes they are pleased.

The date (1st February) explains the word 'Rabbits'. The first thing you said on the first of any month was 'Rabbits'. This, we thought, would bring you luck.
The notelet mentions exams starting the next day, netball team wins and losses against Bala; the prospect of tripping up the stage stairs when collecting a music certificate and a request for 'a lot of tuck'but 'please don't pay anything yourself, not even the postage'
