<p>A Walk to Lake Cynnwch with 'Do' Davies after finishing exams. The girls are holding sphagnum moss which was used during the war. Pupils collected the moss and delivered it to Miss Nightingale's house in Cader Road (headmistress 1924-1940). The Red Cross used the moss to treat soldiers' wounds.

<p>Born in Brithdir and aged 20 at the time the 1891 Census was taken, Margaret (pictured here in the fur coat) was one of 8 servants resident at the school in 1891 and was one of two housemaids. Other domestic staff included a cook, waitress,kitchenmaid,laundress and two laundrymaids. The six teachers recorded on the Census were all born outside Wales. Most pupils were born in Wales. Pupils originally came also from Devon, Wiltshire, London, Lancashire, Nottinghamshire, India, Germany and Brazil. The Domestic staff at the time were all born in Wales.

<p>A ‘legend’ according to one dictionary definition, is a person having a special place in public esteem because of striking qualities or deeds, real or fictitious. 'Do' was, and still is, a DWS legend but in that legend there is nothing fictitious; the real was striking enough. She was one of the ‘Greats’.
</p>
<p>She entered DWS as a 12 year old pupil in 1906 and left in 1912 to attend Aberystwyth University. Following a teaching post in South Wales she returned to DWS in 1919, retiring in 1961 as Deputy Headmistress.
</p>
<p>“She was tall and carried herself very erect; she had short straight hair and blue eyes to rival those of Paul Newman and she oozed a great natural authority. When she walked into a classroom an immediate hush fell”

<p>On the back of the photograph held at the Record Office in Dolgellau there is a contemporary handwritten list of names of the women who attended the Sixth London Reunion.
</p>
<p>It is often quite difficult to read the handwriting so the names and initials given below may not be accurate. The invitation to Joyce Bullas is linked to this page. Mrs Lloyd George and Miss Anstey (headmistress at DWS from 1906- 24) are included in the group photograph.

<p>Megan Lloyd George 1902 -1966 was the daughter of former pupil Margaret Lloyd George. She was brought up mainly at numbers 10 and 11 Downing Street. Her father, Lloyd George, was chancellor of the exchequer and prime minister.
Megan was Wales first woman MP, winning her Anglesey seat as a Liberal in 1929. She was very well known as an inspirational speaker in the 1930s and 40s. Unlike her sister Carey, she was not educated at DWS. In the 1950s she campaigned for a Welsh assembly. In 1945 Megan Lloyd George joined the Labour Party and became MP for Camarthen.

<p>An invitation, by 'kind permission of the Prime Minister and Dame Margaret Lloyd George', for Miss J. Bullas to attend the sixth London reunion at 10 Downing Street in 1921.
The accompanying contemporary newspaper cutting mentions 150 former pupils attending the event. Miss Ann Griffith, a school cook for over forty years and'famous for her cakes', sent a special cake from Dolgelley for the occasion. This was duly cut and 'solemnly', sampled by all present.
An interesting variation on the expected format for Old Girls' reunions was 'a programme of songs and elocution' contributed by past pupils.
Margaret Lloyd George made a short speech referencing the three happy years she had enjoyed at DWS and mention was also made of her daughter Mrs Carey Evans, who had also been to DWS. Unfortunately Carey's departure from India had been delayed until September so she was unable to attend.

<p>A colour photograph of Dolgellau, described as a delightful inland resort situated near to the head of the Mawddach estuary. The Dolgellau-Barmouth railway line can be seen in the bottom left hand corner running alongside the River Wnion and The Marian playing grounds and car park.
