1886 map showing the railway line before its closure in the 1960s. The map is from the Court Guide & Royal Blue Book of Wales by Charles William Deacon and is improved from an Ordnance Survey map. The line ran behind the school and was a vital means of getting to the school by many of the girls. It was closed in 1963, which was a great loss to the local community. After that girls had to take a bus from either Ruabon or Machynlleth to reach school. The custom of throwing school hats into Bala Lake as the train sped by it came to an end. (see "The Fate of your school hat on leaving")

<p>It was the summer of 1971, we went to sun bathe in the meadow after exams above the swimming pool. Looking at the poses, didn't we think we looked good. In the picture is a mixture of boarders and days girls. From left to right Eirian James (me), Rosie Evans, Ann Pugh Roberts, Gwerfyl Hughes (Tws) and Sian Thomas in the front.

<p>Campbell Thompson at the foot of Snowdon. The other two are unknown.<p>
Miss Thompson taught games at DWS for many years. Her neat handwriting was familiar to us all. Each day she would post various lists on the Games noticeboard. There were lists of teams playing in the Saturday matches, cricket ,tennis and netball practice information.<p> At weekends there were compulsory walks and umpires needed for tennis, hockey, netball and cricket matches. Then there was the annual house swimming Gala and annual dancing competition to organise and no doubt lots more besides.<p> We played some form of games every day and must have been a pretty fit lot as a result.
