It was customary for girls in the Sixth Form to attend different houses for tea. It is unclear what Jennie is holding in this photograph (a metal claw?), but it is clear that it was the source of some amusement.

<p>On 21 July 1966, Miss Lickes wrote to parents explaining that in an effort to combat ever-rising costs, girls would in future be asked to give more help with the domestic work of the school. I recall drying dishes and cutlery in the kitchen next to the smaller of the two dining rooms, where we had second sittings. She also reminded parents not to send any "contraband" such as sweets, chocolate etc in parcels to girls or to allow them to try to smuggle any in after going out weekends.

<p>I was 8 years old when I started at Glyn and this was my first dormitory. It was known as the “Baby dormitory.” I recall that three of my roommates were only 6 years old. My bed and “top” (chest of drawers) are marked with an “x”. We were allowed to have a pyjama case, teddy or doll on our beds, and photos and a beaker with our toothbrush and toothpaste in it, on our tops. This photograph also shows the counterpanes with perfect hospital corners, which we learnt from Day 1.

We understand Helen started to work in the DWS kitchens aged 17. Coming originally from Caernarfon she lived in 'San', a tin roofed building by the school bridge. In a very real sense, she was also a boarder and the same age or younger than some of the pupils. She recalls very happy times at DWS. Helen had no idea what we used to call some of the dishes prepared in the kitchen and laughed when she discovered the Glossary on this website.Helen does remember the bucket in this picture was full of water!

1886 map showing the railway line before its closure in the 1960s. The map is from the Court Guide & Royal Blue Book of Wales by Charles William Deacon and is improved from an Ordnance Survey map. The line ran behind the school and was a vital means of getting to the school by many of the girls. It was closed in 1963, which was a great loss to the local community. After that girls had to take a bus from either Ruabon or Machynlleth to reach school. The custom of throwing school hats into Bala Lake as the train sped by it came to an end. (see "The Fate of your school hat on leaving")
