<p>Sited next to the headmistress at the end of one of the long oak dining room tables, no meal at DWS was complete without this small and shiny gong being struck.This was done twice,usually in rapid succession with no time at all for (or any expectation of) a voiced prayer or even an 'Amen'. We would fall silent, bow our heads briefly until it was struck again and then we'd resume our chatter. Sometimes it would also be struck for an announcement, as may be seen in the linked story by Vanessa Gebbie. I asked an old friend what object would sum up our collective experience of DWS. The gong, she said!

<p>An intellectual and visionary Headmistress who was tall, imposing and elegant in colourful Eastern style shawls. She was a member of the 'Friends' and her trust and belief in her pupils derived in large measure from the Quaker belief 'respect for every person, regardless of rank or status and in the essential goodness of everyone' During her tenure, no girl received a punishment for a misdemeanor but was encouraged to look to her conscience.
</p>
<p>Miss Nightingale was a remarkable woman who taught not so much about Latin texts or Old Testament religion but about compassion, the love of beauty surrounding us, about integrity and about the power of silence.
</p>

<p>The first magazine was published in 1897 as a link between the pupils and the old girls. It was edited by Miss Anstey, (senior mistress) with an introduction written by Miss Fewings from Australia. The first edition included an article by ex pupil Eluned Morgan Jones, written from Patagonia.
</p>
<p>The cover used the school colours of green and white and was designed by Miss Louie Rigotti, and old girl studying art in Manchester.
</p>

A photograph of a wooden plaque bearing the letters DWS intertwined and encircled by the motto "Honour Before Honours". This was the original school motto before "Ardua Semper".

<p>'Honour Before Honours' is still the motto of the Brisbane High School for Girls, Australia. Miss Eliza Fewings, Headmistress of DWS 1886-1896, founded this school in 1899, after originally going to take up a position as headmistress at Brisbane Girls Grammar School.
</p>
<p>NOTE- 'Honour Before Honours - The DWS Story' is also the title of the book by Merfyn Wyn Tomos of Meirionnydd Record Office. Published in 2009 and also funded by the Heritage Lottery. 'Honour Before Honours' has been an invaluable resource as we have developed this website.
</p>
