<p>A photo of four pupils outside the summer quarters of all the hamsters,guinea pigs etc that were unfortunate enough to be taken to DWS. In winter they lived in a sort of conservatory off the biology lab which was icy cold , but in summer they would have all baked alive there. They went instead to a corrugated iron shed between the path up to Pen and the swimming pool. The pupils are Joy Robinson, Ann Boak, Penny Evans and Ann Richards

<p>A group of Second Formers sitting on the steps of the School Bridge in the Summer Term 1939 holding bunches of flowers. Gardening was part of the school curriculum and after the School Bridge was opened in 1938, the gardening plots were transferred from the School grounds to the sides of the path leading up to Penycoed.

<p>'Pen' was purchased in 1935 and was the largest of the school boarding houses. It was reached from the main school via the school bridge. The bridge still acts as a gateway to Dolgellau today.
</p>
<p>From the bridge it was quite a steep climb through the woods, then past fields with livestock - including lambs gambolling about in the spring. Then it was through the Kissing Gate and up again, going into 'Pen' at the back door - never the main entrance.

<p>Health section includes information about a resident 'Sister' and a School Medical Officer,remedial exercises, a health certificate to be signed by a 'medical man'and a description of the diet as 'liberal and varied'.

<p>No food or sweets may be brought or sent to school. Birthday cakes, fruit and up to 2 lb.termly of spreads being excepted from the rule. Sweets and chocolate are 'rationed' each week.
</p>
<p>No leave is allowed during the first two or last two week-ends of term and no girl is allowed to sleep away from the school during the term.

<p>1960 prospectus - The Reverend Daniel Williams, D.D. under his will dated 26th June 1711 left funds for the purpose of promoting the education of English and Welsh children. DWS 'aims at fitting girls for suitable careers or for home life, and at training them in habits of sound work, courtesy and consideration for others'.
</p>
<p>The accommodation included 'a magnificent Assembly Hall and Library', Orchestra room, Prefects' studies, Music Wing, Sick Wing and Girls' Common Room. It had accommodation for about 240 boarders between the ages of 7 and 19.
</p>
