<p>Lots of swimmers are watched by the rest of the school. What they are doing exactly is a mystery! Meanwhile, the audience relaxes on the bank, all in their candy striped summer dresses. A blackboard, desk and chair, on the far side of the pool, suggest that this is the annual House Swimming Gala. It looks like it was the perfect day, as far as the weather was concerned. In the background can be seen Tremhyfryd and the school playing field. The field was the scene of many a cricket practice in summer under the watchful and sometimes exasperated eye of DBL, a keen cricketer herself in her time.

<p>This picture was in an album donated to Meirionnydd Archives of photographs taken in the 1930s. The school had a beach hut at Friog which the pupils could use and here they are being driven back to school.

<p>This photo, from Gladys Dutton's collection, is marked 'Jonas, French Teacher'. Miss Jones, whose nickname at school was Jonas, is on the right. Both women are wearing panama hats and either a cardigan or a knitted dress.

<p>It is possible that the beach may have been at Friog where the school had a beach hut. DWS girls went swimming there for many years.
</p>
<p>In the background you can just see a girl in a swimming costume.

<p>A book token awarded to Sue Crowther - the "Beginner's" prize for swimming a length in the pool at Glyn Malden, Summer Term 1961. Anyone else who remembers swimming in that pool will know that this was no mean feat, as it was fed by a freezing cold mountain stream.
