<p>Ley, as she was known at school died in a tragic car accident on June 10th 1970 towards the end of the summer term. This photo was taken only a couple of weeks earlier. She was looking forward to her time at drama school and her future on the stage. The school choir sang at her funeral mass at the Dolgellau Roman Catholic Church "Our Lady of Sorrows".

<p>'I had a parcel containing my overall today and my first letter of term which did not contain any spectacular news. Churchill has not died as yet but the headlines in the paper said 'Churchill Loses Ground'.Poor old Churchill he is 90 and has lived to a ripe old age but somehow it always shocks me to hear of the death or illness of someone famous. I don't know what we would have done without him in the last war. He is a brilliant tactician, God help him. It started to sleet today but it has not stuck because it has been raining. I revised history tonight.'

The scan incorporates two days' diary entries. The first mentions the writer's Daddy sending letters and a gift of a torch, also makes reference to the examination timetable and mentions the students having fish fingers for the first time ("quite nice"). The second entry deals with the state funeral of Winston Churchill, relating how Lady Churchill broke down and how there was a ceremonial firing of cannons. Note:The pupils watched the funeral of Sir Winston Churchill on a black and white television that had been placed on the stage in the hall.

'Winston Churchill died this morning just after 8.It is sad and now another great name will be written in history. Tonight we saw a film on Churchill's life I was nearly crying and after it was over I was depressed. I hope Lady Churchill will realise that everyone will miss him. He is to have a state funeral on Saturday, he is 90 which is a really grand age. I'm sure he will be ranked with great tacticians as Marlborough. I have prayed for him'.

And the next day's entry says:
'Crush got flooded because some nit turned the tap on and forgot to turn it off' and 'We made Joan an apple pie bed but found out, thank goodness, that she doesn't like it so we changed it quick. (Illegible) is going to send me a great record by The Moody Blues.'
