<p>This photograph shows groups of girls sitting and standing in the grounds adjacent to a part of the building then used as a hall. In later years this was to become a gymnasium. The new school hall and library extension would not be added until 1939. For now a tennis net is set up on the patch of grass that would one day be occupied by Miss Nightingale's splendid oak panelled hall and library.

<p>This picture of the 'new dormitory' shows iron bedsteads draped in light counterpanes. They clearly did not have to make their beds with 'hospital corners' as we had to in later years! The girls also had a degree of privacy not afforded to later students. Each bed had its own curtain rail. The floorboards are covered (just along the walkways) with carpet. Wash bowls can be seen on each chest of drawers. There are photographs on the mantelpiece. It isn't obvious how the dormitory was lit at night. Perhaps the girls had nightlights. The room at the end of the dormitory may have been occupied by a senior girl or a teacher.

<p>The centrefold of the 1903 prospectus shows 15 girls dotted around a field playing hockey. The girls are all wearing hats,long sleeved blouses and long skirts.
Cattle can be seen in the picture too. Presumably the livestock were separated by a fence from the players.

<p>This room was later to become the Geography room. In 1903 it seems to have been multipurpose. Perhaps it was used for performances as well as for instruction. There is an upright piano and two sets of curtains could have been used to divide the space. The double desks are worn and scratched. Ink wells are visible on the desks in the foreground. The room is lined with pictures and busts. A satchel hangs over a seat.

<p>The curriculum had included butter making and cookery since Miss Fewings' time (headmistress 1886-1896). This image shows a wooden churn,and what perhaps is a gaslit stove to the right of the table. A set of scales can be seen on the left and what looks like an oven is in the foreground, on the right. The room is lined with shelves for pans, jugs,jelly moulds, colanders and plates. There is no sink visible in this picture. The kitchen is gaslit.

<p>'Pen' was purchased in 1935 and was the largest of the school boarding houses. It was reached from the main school via the school bridge. The bridge still acts as a gateway to Dolgellau today.
</p>
<p>From the bridge it was quite a steep climb through the woods, then past fields with livestock - including lambs gambolling about in the spring. Then it was through the Kissing Gate and up again, going into 'Pen' at the back door - never the main entrance.

<p>Three school orchestras, a percussion band, a school choir and a Madrigal Society. Concerts arranged, providing opportunities to hear 'first-class performers'.Each form has its own gramophone. A flourishing Dramatic Society and Literary and Debating Society, Walking Club, Science Club, Gymnastics and Badminton Clubs. Regular camps in the summer holidays for the Guides and Ranger Companies. Films shown on the school's sound film projector. Girls may have their own gardens and keep certain pets.

<p>Physical Education - Games played every day - hockey, netball and lacrosse in winter, cricket, tennis and rounders in summer - gymnastics and dancing taught. In summer the girls learn swimming in the sea at Fairbourne where the school has a large bathing hut, or in the outdoor pool at the Junior House

<p>Subjects included English, French, Welsh,German, Latin and Greek. Then there was Aural Culture, Hygiene, Class Singing, Domestic Science, Handicrafts, Speech Training,Games and Dancing, Art, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. General Certificate of Education examinations were taken at Advanced and Ordinary level.
</p>
<p>At this time the prospectus states there was a Domestic Science House. Here girls could 'learn by practical experience catering, buying, cooking, entertaining, needlework, decorating and household repairs' apparently.
</p>
Most of the 'extra subjects' on offer involved learning how to play a musical instrument.

<p>1960 prospectus - The Reverend Daniel Williams, D.D. under his will dated 26th June 1711 left funds for the purpose of promoting the education of English and Welsh children. DWS 'aims at fitting girls for suitable careers or for home life, and at training them in habits of sound work, courtesy and consideration for others'.
</p>
<p>The accommodation included 'a magnificent Assembly Hall and Library', Orchestra room, Prefects' studies, Music Wing, Sick Wing and Girls' Common Room. It had accommodation for about 240 boarders between the ages of 7 and 19.
</p>
