<p>Directed by Avril Boshell, this production of Christopher Fry's play was performed in the Christmas term 1967, all the parts being played by the girls of DWS. It never crossed our minds for a moment to wonder why we ended up playing both men and women. It was just the way it was.

<p>A group of girls dressed in compulsory playtime dungarees, standing by the field where we spent many hours playing, making dens and exploring. We even formed a skiffle band with an old washboard and packing case. </p>
<p>On one occasion we went exploring up the stream which ran through the property. It was strictly out of bounds, for good reason, as a huge boulder crushed my foot and I was laid up for weeks. That didn't mean we escaped punishment, probably endless lines.</p>

<p>A page from an autograph book includes the signatures of Dame Sybil Thorndike and that of her husband, the actor and theatre director Lewis Casson. Together they played the lead roles in a production of Macbeth in the school hall at DWS on April 2nd 1941.
Following the closure of The Old Vic Theatre in London during World War 2,the Old Vic company relocated to Burnley.They toured the North of England and South Wales playing miners' institutes and village halls and also DWS! Buses brought children from other schools in the area to Dolgellau to see the production. One 'old girl's' mother recalled travelling by coach from Bala to see it. Stories on this site mention the production which must have left quite an impression. It would be a bit like having Judi Dench acting in your school hall today!

From the Towneley Manuscript (fifteenth century). The Playwright combined the story of the Nativity with a pseudo-nativity, borrowed from folk-lore, involving a stolen sheep. The characters being a group of shepherds, Mak, a sheep-stealer and Gib, his wife.

Jennie Hutcheson and Margaret McKean as George and Emily in 'Our Town' by Thornton Wilder in 1966. Being an all girls school we got to play all the parts. Set in a fictional small town in America, between 1901 and 1913, we loved doing 'Our Town'. Mrs Boshell directed, Bahia Nakhjavani was the stage manager (that's a key role in the play by the way!)
