Jean Petty's First School Report, Dec 1938

My mother, Jean Petty (Crowther) was a boarder at DWS, 1938-44. She came from Nelson in north-east Lancashire and this is her school report for her first term at DWS, the Autumn Term 1938, aged 11. Being born in September, she was a year younger than average for her class, Form III. Her form mistress was Miss Cane and Miss Nightingale was Head Mistress. My favourite remarks are for Gardening, summed up as “Fair” and for which she was awarded a ‘C+’ for Industry and a ‘B’ for Progress. She never did take to Gardening!
